After all it’s cute, with its bright orange and red beak, black and white feathers and small size. They look like miniature penguins that fly around like hummingbirds. A worthwhile sight to see. Puffins live at sea until it is time to breed, at which time they make their way to Eastern Egg Rock Island and other islands off the coast of Maine. Eastern Egg Rock Island is about 5 miles from New Harbor by boat, the closest cruise to the island. They begin to come to the island in April; however the best viewing begins at the end of May and goes into June and July. Puffins mate for life, with couples staying together for over 20 years. They raise one chick or puffling each year over the summer on the island. The chicks stay on land until about 40 days after hatching, at which time they will swim out in the sea. They will leave the island in late summer and typically return to the island in two to three years to breed. Steps to plan your Puffin trip: 1. Spring on the point is glorious, the leaves are a bright green having just newly formed, the air is sweet and fresh with ocean breezes. The migrating birds stop over for a rest, giving us the opportunity to see types that are not here all the time. Spring flowers provide us with the much-needed color we have missed during the winter. And since it is not quite the height of the season, there are less people. There are so many sights to see, experiences to enjoy and meals to savor that one day simply is not enough to enjoy the Pemaquid Peninsula. In fact, I’ve now been here for six years and I’m constantly discovering new adventures and beauty all around me. However, not everyone is so lucky with their time. If all you have time for is a two-night, three-day visit, be sure and maximize your stay. In fact, I’m sharing the perfect way a local would spend 36 hours on the Pemaquid Peninsula. We have traditionally thought about getting away as a vacation, where we sightsee, lie around on a beach, eat out every night and sleep late…essentially recharging ourselves in a more restful and observational manner. This concept and desire still exist; however, it has morphed a bit into more of an experiential getaway, where you truly immerse yourself in the locale and everything it is known for. The goal is personal growth, emotional connections, and a deeper understanding of the destination, which takes you beyond mere sightseeing to create transformative travel experiences. So, as I thought about this, it occurred to me that I would need to come up with two versions of this experiential travel…one for those who want to do and one for those who would prefer to view. For example, you may love seeing the moonlight over the bay from the shoreline or your guest room window, versus you may want to truly experience it by taking a moonlight kayak tour on the bay. Or you may like seeing the lobster boats coming into New Harbor to unload their catch, versus you want to be on a lobster boat learning and actually hauling in the traps. I think you get the idea. I happen to know of a place that offers all the above. It has become synonymous with enjoying time off from work and experiencing “local” attractions. Travel within your own country to places you may have on your bucket list. **Workcation** has been on the rise for the last few years, with the Covid Pandemic catapulting it to where it is today. With more people able to work remotely they are choosing to do so anywhere by combining work and vacation, as they can work from anywhere. And why not? Of course, it is important to have a home base with access to strong fast internet. While cell phone reception is important, more and more meetings occur using web-based meeting platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. You can complete your work and then go out to explore the area. JOMO is the joy of mission out or relaxing and immersing yourself in a place rather than rushing around to see everything you can in the time you are in the specific location. There is a mindfulness to a slowcation in that you luxuriate in the experience or activity to truly appreciate every minute of it. This may include just sitting on the back deck reading a book while you sip a glass of wine or going for a hike with a picnic lunch to enjoy on the rocks overlooking the ocean. With are all buzzing around we do in our daily lives, more and more of us are looking for time when wellness and self-care are a priority. These are places that have very little or no light pollution obliterating the stars in the sky. There are designated Dark Sky Sites that dictate where and how light can be used to not affect the view of the night sky. It is estimated that nearly 80% of the world lives under light polluted skies and that one third of the people can’t see the Milky Way. This type of vacation may focus on photographing the night sky, chasing the Milky Way (or actually seeing it for the first time), star gazing or nighttime activities. These beacons of light, as well as sound, guided ships, sailors and fishermen to safety within the harbors that they stood/stand watch over. The Maine coast was notorious for its thick unpredictable fog, which would shroud the area, thick as pea soup. Ethereal sea smoke rises beautifully off the water when the air is much colder creating a mesmerizing yet hazardous phenomenon, as it thickens visibility is inhibited. With the increasing ocean and air temperatures the occurrence of fog has become less frequent. You can begin the journey at the Maine-New Hampshire border at the [Whaleback Ledge Lighthouse](https://visitmaine.com/articles/whaleback-ledge-light-station/) and end it at the [West Quoddy Head Lighthouse](https://westquoddy.com/) which is the easternmost in the United States. The [Portland Head Light](https://portlandheadlight.com/) was the first lighthouse constructed on the shores of Maine; it was commissioned by George Washington in 1791. Some you can visit; others are just visible offshore. They contain parks, museums, lighthouse keeper houses/quarters, the ability to go up the lighthouse and offer exceptional photo opportunities. US Government began issuing state quarters in 1999, initially issuing at a rate of approximately five per year with the program running through 2008 to include all states and then territories in 2009. The Maine State Quarter, issued in 2003, depicted the [Pemaquid Point Lighthouse](https://www.bristolmaine.org/parks-recreation/pemaquid-point-lighthouse-park) located on the point of the peninsula on the Muscongus Bay side. It was commissioned by President John Quincy Adams in 1827. It sits on exposed bedrock ledge which dramatically slopes down into the ocean. It is one of the hottest trends, people looking to escape the heat and crowds, looking for cool (that is temperature cool as well as you know, COOL) vacation destinations. It just so happens that we are in one of those areas. The coast of Maine is cooler; temperature wise but not tundra-like cold. Ok, occasionally we have a cold snap when that pesky polar vortex comes to visit, that however has not been more than a few days in our experience. Believe it or not we are a bit more temperate on our peninsula because we are surrounded by “warmer” ocean water, unlike the inland colder climes. There is nothing like a brisk walk around the Pemaquid Loop, then coming back to the warm Bradley Inn with pink cheeks that still feel cool and fresh from the outdoors. We are lucky to be able to experience this regularly and can certainly attest to its merit. We have been a seasonal business, May through October, however, have are now opening the Inn three weekends in the winter. [Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta](https://www.mainepumpkinfest.com/) One of the most unique Maine fall festivals takes place on Main Street in Damariscotta every year on Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend. Damariscotta is located about an hour’s drive north of Portland along Route 1 and just 20 minutes from The Bradley Inn. The Damariscotta Pumpkin Fest is a celebration of the arrival of autumn, which starts with a Pumpkin parade featuring harvest-themed floats. You can walk around Damariscotta and Newcastle to view the intricately carved giant pumpkins. The week before there is a weigh off to determine who wins first place for largest pumpkin. From a pumpkin drop, where pumpkins are dropped two hundred feet from a crane onto a variety of targets, to a pumpkin catapult, where pumpkins are launched and finally to the famous pumpkin boat regatta where contestants sit, paddle and race in hand-carved giant pumpkin boats. We have sat down with the owners during their seed buy in the winter to provide input of the types of produce we would like to the restaurant. The business, owned and operated by Kaylee and Smokey McKeene, offers gifts, pantry items, fresh seafood to go and house made foods to enjoy in their onsite alfresco dining space. Smokey founded Pemaquid Oyster Company on the Damariscotta River in 1986, the area’s pioneer oyster farm. Pemaquid Oyster now raises over a million oysters each year that are shipped around the world. You, however, can enjoy them right at the source or at The Bradley Inn. We have been working with Smokey for years, purchasing his Pemaquid Oysters as well as local mussels and seafood. ![The Rooting Pig, Broad Arrow Farm's Charcuterie Bar. It is a great stop for fabulous small plates and a drink in the afternoon or early evening. Drive into Newcastle to stop at the Shuck Station for a taste of the many different oysters farmed in the Damariscotta River. You can sample varieties on tasting platters along with other menu items and drinks. Make your way up the road to the rural farmhouse Oxford Brewery to sample their rotating beers on draft and in bottles in a rustic tasting room. You can walk around the farm’s orchard where they grow fruit for their beer and raise their pigs. Don’t stop there, experience and learn about the food we eat. Enjoy a wine and oyster tasting cruise and learn all about the oyster farms on the river, on the Damariscotta River Tripper. Take a tour of Glidden Point Oyster Farm which is located just outside of Newcastle in Edgecomb. Hunting for their eggs, meat, and feathers. Public outrage led to the formation of the Audubon Society which was instrumental in the establishment of protective laws The National Audubon Society’s Project Puffin was established in the 1970s and run by Stephen Kress, whom we have had the honor of meeting right here at the Inn. Puffins return to where they were born to nest, so to bring them back to the islands off Maine, eggs were transplanted from larger existing colonies to connect the hatchlings to their new home. With puffins only laying one egg per year, is has taken years to reinhabit the Maine islands. The Atlantic Puffin migrates in the spring to island habitats to mate and nest, after wintering at sea. It is at this time that their beaks and feet turn the colorful orange and red, for which they are known, in preparation of breeding season. After all they want to make themselves more attractive, as they rub their beaks together during their mating ceremony. The puffin is only 8 to 10 inches tall when standing and 11 to 12 inches long from beak to tail when flying. They weigh just over 1 lb. They can fly incredibly fast, 48 to 55 mph, flapping their little wings up to 400 beats per minute. They literally look like tiny footballs that whiz by in a blur. We are incredibly lucky, as the southernmost island the Puffins inhabit is Eastern Egg Rock, which is a 20-minute boat trip from New Harbor. Hardy Boat Cruises runs the primary boat for National Audubon and Project Puffin, with 10% of every fare donated directly to Project Puffin. With two to three trips daily, depending upon the season, beginning in May going through August or until the Puffins migrate, there are many opportunities to experience this beautiful bird. With the warming temperatures in the Gulf of Maine, the fish on which the Puffins feed are dropping in numbers, which can lead to underweight chicks therefore making survival in the harsh winter ocean difficult. While the water and air temperatures fluctuate, the Gulf of Maine is warming up 96% faster than the world’s oceans (Gulf of Maine Research Institute, Gulf of Maine Warming Update: Summer 2021, Announcement October 26, 2021). The puffins are not expected to adjust to the warmer conditions, phenomenon that can only be changed by addressing climate change measures. Let’s start out at the point of the Peninsula, with marble cove. A small, rocky coast carve out that overlooks the mouth of John’s Bay; you can marvel at the view as well as search for treasures between the rocks on the beach in the cove. Not sure when it began, but over the years people have been throwing marbles into the rolling waves off the rocks. The end of May is one of the best times of the year to view species that may not normally live in the area, as the migratory birds stop on their journey back north for the summer. This is especially true for shorebirds. The Pemaquid Peninsula extends well out into the Gulf of Maine, which is a large body of water off the Atlantic Ocean, marking the entrance to John’s and Muscongus Bays. The iconic Pemaquid Point Lighthouse sits on awe inspiring exposed rock that offers magnificent views of the ocean as well as the waterfowl floating in the surrounding waves. The location of the peninsula makes for an excellent resting spot for migratory birds, which are visible from various locations, all within easy walking distance from the inn. In addition, the Alewives begin their journey up the local waterways from the ocean to their freshwater spawning grounds, attracting all sorts of birds of prey, including bald eagles, ospreys, cormorants, great blue herons, loons and let us not forget seagulls. Plus, it is fun to see the fish leaping out of the water working their way up the streams and fish ladders with the birds circling above. One caller was looking to stay for a couple of nights, the other was looking to have dinner in our restaurant. Got me thinking that we should include information on our website to assist guests that are not only boating in but also flying in on their own plane. New Harbor is a true working harbor, which is one of the things that makes it so charming, so there are no public moorings for boats to stop by or overnight. The closest place to do so would be in Pemaquid Harbor, a mere 3.9 miles from the inn, which worked for the first caller who planned to bring bicycles, they wanted to stay for a couple of nights. However, if you are coming for dinner, as the other caller wanted, a taxi would be your best bet. [Twin Village Taxi](https://www.facebook.com/twinvillagetaxi/) will come down from Damariscotta for approximately $30 to transport you to the inn. Calling them in advance to schedule the pickup would be best. We would also suggest that you make dinner reservations in advance to ensure that we have a table available for you. We would suggest that you rent a car to drive to the inn, it is also better to have a car to get around the area while here. We had two attendees, a mother and daughter who have become friends. We had a blast, first we went to High Hopes Farm down the road for a tour and to pick a huge red cabbage which we cooked for dinner. Then came back for lunch and the cooking class. We focused on making pasta which was fun. Later we invited Meaghan and Ross Nichols from High Hopes Farm to join us for dinner. We feasted on everything we made plus more, all paired with wines that Donna, our Mariner Rep, helped us to pick out. While we had a great time, it was really a learning experience for us. It was good that we had only two attendees. Since then we have had numerous inn and dinner guests that have asked about cooking classes, which has gotten me thinking seriously about hosting one again. Our kitchen, while big and set up well for commercial cooking, is not the best teaching kitchen. We will need to be creative so multiple groups will have stations at which to learn/work. As I have mentioned before, I cook most breakfasts at the Inn. And as those of you that have been an inn guest know I think a bit out of the box, many times using ingredients that do not come to mind for breakfast. I have had many compliments on the dishes that I serve, so that got me thinking why not host a breakfast cooking class. One that showcases some of the dishes that have received rave reviews. Honestly, they are not difficult to make which gave me the idea to focus on breakfast meals that are easily translated for home cooking. Nothing so elaborate that you make it once in the class and then never again. The class will most likely be held in October, on a weekend, which would mean we would close the restaurant the night of the class so that attendees could all sit together and have breakfast for dinner. Quite the visual, huh? Well, I must admit there have been a couple of times where I let my imagination get the best of me and got the hebbie jebbies. Like when I heard the loud noise, went to check it out…again with my flashlight and hot pink robe…to get down to the first floor, Tony and I sleep on the third floor, only to find a light on that should not have been on. I then made the mistake of looking down that long, super dark hallway to the public restrooms. Well, I then ran up all the stairs very quickly…with that constant feeling as if someone…or thing was chasing me. You know that feeling. It’s irrational but sometimes you just give into it. In the morning I found out the Ross and Clarissa heard the loud noise and had gone around to check it out, they had left the light on. Everything is sprinkled with magic. We had cut a few pine trees down on the property to decorate, no worries they needed to be taken down for various reasons anyway so why not create some beauty at the end of the year. Two were placed inside the inn, one in the front entrance and the other outside the tavern. Check out the pictures below. The third one was placed near the front door as the space was bare and needed some help, it was decorated with lights and a sled containing buoys. Now, however that the inn is closed, we have taken that outside tree and moved it to back, where we can see it at night from our window. OMG, it is so beautiful with the snow on it and the white twinkling lights, I just stare at it. It’s been burned into my memory forever…no kidding, it really is like one of those magical Christmas movie trees in the woods, with the birds flying around and the cute little animals. We decorated the inside trees with ornaments we collected over the years, brought with us from California. Since the last California Christmas was in 2015, we had not seen some of our decorations for four years, oh what fun it was to bring them all out again! Our trees were always done in white, silver and clear to emulate snow and ice, with white lights the tree always looked super magical. In addition, we were lucky enough to have hosted a Wedding Celebration at the Inn over the Thanksgiving weekend, which just added to the festivities. The couple were of Scottish decent, with the bride in a white dress and tartan sash and the groom in a kilt. They even held the ceremony out at the Pemaquid Lighthouse, hardy souls! The colors, bagpipe music and theme were perfect with the greenery and atmosphere at the Inn. Winter weddings and other special parties or group events are perfect all around, for us and you! As a year finishes and we look forward to the next we critic the previous year to determine what worked and did not and then make the changes necessary to become more successful in the following year. 2019 was the year of birthday celebrations, with quite a few parties for people turning 70 years old or more. Enough for us to notice the trend, therefore promoting the hosting of a birthday celebration at The Bradley Inn, especially for a certain age, is in our plan. The notable parties hosted ranged from a 140-year celebration, twins turning 70, with 25 people to a somewhat larger group of 35 for a 50th celebration to an intimate dinner for 5 for an inn guest turning 75 on a night our restaurant was closed. For parties that are larger we close the restaurant to the public and the entire space becomes available to the group. Typically, we start with cocktails and appetizers in the tavern and on the back decks and then move into the dining room or far side of the tavern for dinner. One gentleman planned a very special birthday celebration for his wife who was turning 75. He rented the Garden Cottage for a couple of nights, scheduled a massage, ordered a picnic lunch and ended with a special dinner for 5. We started with hors d’oeuvres on the back deck with cocktails then moved into the dining room to the round glass table for dinner. We customized the meal specifically to his request. It was a surprise and his wife was truly overwhelmed by the entire celebration. Bear right at the triangle in Newcastle and continue over the bridge through the village of Damariscotta. At the traffic light turn right onto Route 129/130, Bristol Road. After about three miles remain on the left fork (Route 130) and continue another 11 miles to the Inn. We are located on the right-hand side of the road. You will see a large blue sign at the end of our driveway, just before Bristol Road veers to the left towards the lighthouse.
